Manufacturing (23%)is the largest segment of the local economy, with education, health and social services (21.2%) second. There are about 150 manufacturing facilities in Pickens County. The textile industry, long the mainstay for South Carolina, is declining, and as a result, the unemployment rate is higher than the national average for both the state, and Pickens County.

The Upstate (10 counties from Anderson to Spartanburg) area is creating alliances with Clemson and the University of South Carolina in Greenville, and companies such as BMW which has a major auto assembly plant in Greer, to create new research and development oriented jobs. A major industrial park, Pickens Commerce Park between Clemson and Easley is attracting new companies.
The occupation breakdown for the Easley area shows management, professional, and related occupations at 33%. The next highest occupation group is sales and office occupations at 25%. The world's leading Kayak manufacturer, Confluence, is located in Easley. Many residents commute to both Greenville, and Clemson for
